Who are you outside your therapist role?
I find it hard to answer such questions from my clients as there is so much about me as there is about a client or any other human being. I am a wife, daughter, sister, friend, student and an aunt to a beautiful nephew. I try to play my roles as fully as I can, but sometimes I struggle too. I have come to develop a genuine love for all my people over the years, although there's still a long way to go. I love taking care of my plants. Watching them grow despite trying climatic conditions, reminds me about the resilience of a living being and the inherent desire for growth in all beings. I am a regular practitioner of yoga since 2021 and take immense pride in enjoying my body's flexibility. I thoroughly enjoy the meditation practices with my teacher who I value deeply. My husband and I like to travel, and he teaches me a lot about art, history, culture, food and people through our travels. Apart from this, I am still learning new things about myself. Most of my long standing clients have now become important people I have developed a deep bond with over many years, and we sometimes like to go for a cup of tea or coffee after our session to enjoy our human bonding outside the therapy room.

I am trained in Existential-Humanistic Therapy.
Each Individual session is 60 minutes long. Couples' therapy is 75-80 minutes long.
I think I will answer this slightly differently. I started training in and practising Existential therapy 3 years into my practice. This is because through my training and readings I discovered a way of being with clients and people which was so full of love and appreciation, honesty and sincerity that it was humbling. I started to notice changes in my clients who were making meaningful transitions in their life. To be able to participate in their journey gives me immense joy and hope till this date that we are all capable of becoming more of our current version. As I write this, I feel a genuine love for what human beings are capable of in their life. This is a rewarding experience of my therapist journey.
Existential-Humanistic therapy is a school of thought within Psychology that values human beings navigating their way in life through relationships with self, others and the world as life throws WILD CARDS at them. Simply put, it values and celebrates the story and life of each individual- even if it is filled with fear, sadness, anger, numbness and a disconnect. We are never right or wrong, but our inner life has a rich story to reveal, even to ourselves, and to uncover that is the purpose of therapy work. The ultimate goal is to live a life that is truly ours, not designed by other forces. Most people come to therapy after a life event that involves a PERSONAL LOSS, like loss of a relationship, identity, confidence and self. Such moments are rich as they prompt us to look inward into our neglected self and help to open a door into our wide inner word.
Existential-Humansitic therapy is EXPERIENTIAL, that encourages listening to the music behind our words and reflecting with the therapist on that music. This reflection is best achieved in the presence of a trained professional rather than alone. It involves finding the COURAGE to be open to ourself and be curious about our experiences, even if they are difficult. The answers we seek are within.
It is advisable for us to meet once or twice a week for at least 1- 2 years. Deep therapy can hardly be achieved without frequent meetings. However, many long standing clients eventually reduce the frequency to 2 sessions a month after weekly therapy for 1-2 years. We eventually reach a place when the client seeks sessions out at their own will and pace for deeper conversations.
This answer has no definitive YES or NO. Therapy works well only if we can be CURIOUS and OPEN. Many experienced clients feel that therapy worked for them when they were ready and when they found a good ally in their therapist. If therapy hasn't worked for you, it maybe because of inappropriate timing in your life and an insufficient match between you and the therapist.
Existential-Humanistic therapy usually helps those seeking a deep desire to know themselves as the first step for mental well-being. Quick fixes and immediate resolutions do not bring long-term change and only solve the problem on the surface insufficiently. I advice all people who reach out to try at least 2-4 sessions with me to decide what works for them. I try to help most people, but sometimes I may reach my limits. In that case, we can try to find alternative ways of support, like referrals to other professionals.
